Back to the Manor!

After a day away from the manor, I am fresh and ready to begin the next phase. I will finish applying the stone facade to the portico so I can get it painted in a few days. While that is drying I will be framing out the front porch window and door and get those built so that the portico can be installed.

I really need to get started on the builders foam foundation so the house can be "sunk" into place and the porch steps (both front and side) as well as the cellar doors installed. I am still putting off the application of the shingles for last.

I am also not 100% happy with the front steps. I really feel that they don't quite flow properly with the portico. I will wait until it is attached and judge from there. I may end up using clay instead of the grout for a finish. Besides, I want them to angle down the slope and I want to round them off a bit and create a fountain area near the base. This will take some planning to get it just right. One of the main reasons I really need to get this beast on it's base.

Have a great day and I will put up new pics when I have some progress to show!

  1. Have you tried paperclay at all? It takes about 3 minutes to get the hang of it and air dries overnight (obviously depends on air conditions and thickness of use). When dry it's a pale beige/grey stone color and you easily paint it add depth.

    1. Paperclay is my favorite! The entire exterior is done with Das brand paperclay. Been using it forever. I was just trying to "switch things up" a bit. The problem with the portico is that there are support structures to help prevent warping and the clay needs to be applied evenly along the entire span so the thickness is different at various points. It's not so much "hard" as it is "not as easy" as usual for a clay project. Thanks! Still can't wait to see your Beacon Hill ;-)

  2. Hi Michi,
I can't wqait to see the portico finished and the sunk house! I think the front steps might be a little small for the new portico...perhaps you might prefer something a little heavier and bigger in scale?
I can't wait to see it all together.
    Hugs,

  3. I absolutely agree. Once it is in place I am going to build a new, more grand staircase that will match up with the portico more appropriately. I just need to get this monster on it's base so everything lines up and levels properly. I can't wait! Have a great day Giac!
